Weekly meal prep tips and tricks

Some of my favourite weekends centre around food.

A Pinterest recipe pinning frenzy on Friday evening, a trip to the grocery store on Saturday morning, a little mealtime indulgence on Saturday evening and a lot of cooking for the week ahead on Sunday.

I’m quite possibly an emotional eater and, if there was ever any doubt, my foodie weekends confirm it. I’m pretty sure I spend at least 90% of my two days a week off thinking about (and eating!) food. Meal plans relax me, cooking de-stresses me and, rightly or wrongly, eating seems to comfort me. Plus, over the last few weeks I’ve found myself happiest in the kitchen, so why wouldn’t I spend the best part of a weekend in there?

You know those times in life when you get really busy, and you sort of just stop bothering to look after yourself? 

It starts with a long day and a ‘once-in-a-while’ comfort food treat, and spirals until you can’t even remember what a salad looks like any more.

OK, I’m probably being over dramatic, but I’m really starting to notice what used to be manageable cravings turning into daily mealtime staples that I think about eating at least 90% of the time I’m awake!  (more…)

I love it when random flavour experiments just work.

Usually, in my case, they don’t – so much so, that I’ve built up something of a reputation with my husband for cooking ‘weird things’!

So I surprised even myself last week when, in a still half-asleep state, my almond milk and basil flavoured breakfast smoothie concoction actually tasted nice.


A like, a link and a learning #4

Hey everyone! Welcome to your ‘like, link and learning’ post #4. 

I love this time of the week for winding down, relaxing and leaving the busyness of the last few days behind. I used to work Saturdays when I was still a journalist, and I honestly don’t know how I did it. And if it’s something that you currently do, then I salute you!

Usually by the time I get to Friday my body starts going into ‘shut down’ mode as it prepares for a lazy weekend. A bit of light yoga, a bit of recipe planning, and a lot of cooking and eating – it’s what my weekends are all about! Plus it’s a chance for me to recharge my batteries and reflect on the week that’s been.

So, without further ado, let’s get on with this week’s post…


Turmeric roasted vegetables with spelt

Turmeric roasted root vegI don’t know if you’ve heard, but apparently there’s a new super food in town.

Healthy foodies across the blogosphere are celebrating the anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, disease-fighting properties of turmeric, thanks to the powerful antioxidant compound that gives the root vegetable its yellow colour – curcumin.

A quick Google search will tell you that turmeric root can be used to fight cancer, delay the onset of diabetes and even alleviate depression.

Sadly, I’m no nutritionist, so I can’t claim scientific authority on the subject. But what I do know is that turmeric gives food a deliciously spicy kick (and is really hard to get out of your fingers!)


2015 February favourites

Is it me, or did February just go really fast?

It did, didn’t it? And I’m almost 100% sure it wasn’t because I started drinking again after dry Jan (kidding!)

For me, February started all full of good intentions, and ended in a big fat sugary mess *sigh*. I’d like to think that a complete inability to resist freshly baked chocolate brownies makes me normal though, so I won’t be beating myself up too much. Plus they were delicious, which is really the only thing that counts!
